All the MODL components are built for multi-sensory blending from the ground up. Learning and retention are optimized as each objective is paired purposefully with the appropriate modality: (G)ATHER with Facilitated Instruction in a Virtual Classroom, (E)XPAND with Self-Paced E-Learning and other references, (A)PPLY Learning with “Day in the Life” Scenario Exercises, and (R)EVIEW via Instructor-guided Assessment.
Each student completes a full GEAR cycle every 2-3 days or 2-3 hours, depending on the length of the course. Each cycle provides multiple ways to learn, practice, and assess.
MODL Student Kits include the following items: an activity-based Student Workbook, a 90-day voucher for “Day-in-the-Life” Scenarios, a 90-day voucher for E-Learning (if appropriate), an MS Press Training Kit (if appropriate), and a student CD-ROM.
Following is a detailed description of each component included in the MODL Student Kit:
- MODL Student Workbooks – The MODL Student Workbook is written with approximately 35 interactions for every 2-hour facilitated module. This collaborative guide is more than a reference, it is a participation tool. The Interactive Student Workbook is written in collaboration with the MODL Instructor Slides and Instructor Notes. Each MODL activity is represented in the workbook with detailed student material and instructions. Student Workbooks are delivered to students in bound hard-copy form.
- Microsoft E-Learning (90-Day Voucher) – Each GEAR cycle includes an objective-level E-Learning assignment designed to teach new topics and/or reinforce facilitated lessons. This approach allows students to optimize their self-paced learning time by focusing on the content which enhances their overall learning experience, thus promoting long-term cognitive encoding. E-Learning assignments are delivered to GEAR students using Microsoft’s E-Learning platform and linked from the CPLS Class Portal. Each Student Kit includes a 90-Day voucher for the E-Learning courses covered in class. Refer to the Microsoft E-Learning platform in the graphic below.

- Toolwire “Day-in-the-Life” Scenarios (90-Day Voucher) – MODL Scenarios integrate Flash-based intelligence with Virtual Server technology to deliver a “real life” problem solving work experience. Scenario objectives and exercises are presented from an “on-the-job” perspective and integrated directly into each GEAR cycle. Toolwire develops and integrates several innovative building blocks into each Avatar-based Scenario, including: character dialog, eMail, text-based phone messages, documentation, and pre-scripted notes. In addition, Live Virtual Servers are hosted with pre-configured server images, step-by-step instructions, tip and tricks, and a “Check Your Work” feature to provide immediate proficiency feedback. Toolwire develops approximately one Scenario for each GEAR module. Each Student Kit includes a 90-Day voucher for the Scenarios. Check out a sample Scenario in the figure below.

To order MODL student kits, use the same ordering process as MOC (Microsoft Official Curriculum). Remember, Distance Learning SKUs all end with the letter ‘L’.
